In the challenging landscape of recurrent droughts and low-income agriculture, Adarsh Shiksha Samiti is dedicated to reshaping livelihoods through strategic interventions in agriculture and animal husbandry. The organization recognizes the multifaceted challenges faced by farmers and livestock rearers, ranging from low productivity to inadequate knowledge of modern farming techniques. The Livelihoods program is designed to address these challenges comprehensively, promoting sustainable practices and enhancing income opportunities.
Agriculture Initiatives
Farmers’ Struggles
The majority of households rely on agriculture, facing challenges such as meager landholding, low production, and dependence on rain-fed cultivation (only 25% of the area is irrigated), resulting in recurrent food and income shortages.
Low Productivity Factors
Lack of knowledge about modern agriculture techniques, use of low-yielding seeds, and limited use of fertilizers contribute to the low productivity in agriculture.
Livestock Development
Goat Rearing Groups
Community-based cooperatives and goat rearing groups are promoted to manage goat rearing more efficiently, reducing risks and increasing income. Over three years, 550 poor women were organized into 50 goat rearing groups across five villages.
Training & Capacity Building
The organization conducts scientific training for target groups, engaging local veterinary doctors and experts. Training focuses on improved methodologies and technologies for effective goat rearing.
Goat Development Program
Adarsh Shiksha Samiti purchases improved breeds of goats, considering factors like breed pedigree, weight, height, and strength. Cost-benefit analyses precede the distribution of goats to beneficiaries.
Agricultural Sustainability
Fodder Tree Plantation
A nursery of 16,000 fodder plants was raised to encourage agro-forestry patterns, ensuring a sustainable supply of green fodder, especially during the summer. The increased water availability supports animal husbandry, field irrigation, and domestic purposes.
Improved Farming Demonstrations
Small and marginal farmers face challenges in absorbing agricultural technology. The project introduces high-yield varieties of seeds and establishes a seed bank. Farmers take responsibility for seed production, storage, procurement, and redistribution.
